Your Support Matters
One of the great things about working with the Obesity Action Coalition and their Your Weight Matters Convention is their realization that sometimes the people that really need that support, education and inspiration offered by the OAC need some help getting there. For the second year, the OAC has been able to offer full scholarships to help individuals to the event, cover their hotel and full admission to the event. This year, they initially were able to award 6 general scholarships.
I say initially, because then as part of their partnership with Eisai in the “Weigh-in for Healthy Change” initiative, 10 additional full scholarships were awarded. These awards were geared specifically towards people who “have addressed their weight through medical weight management, intensive behavioral counseling under the care of a physician, or pharmacological treatment – either past or present”.
Those who were awarded scholarships is geared towards those who have a desire to help the OAC and other organizations influence the Legislative Advocacy process as part of the push to help get the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) passed. As such, these 10 recipients will be taking part in the National Advocacy Training session taking place on Thursday during the convention.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to go to DC in September of 2013, after attending the National Advocacy Training at the YWM Convention in Phoenix the month before. We were part of introducing the TROA to various House and Senate staff members and representatives. This year is a big mile stone as it’s currently on both floors, hopefully we can get it through this year.
And it’s through the continued support of the membership of the OAC, as well as sponsors like Eisai that things like this happen.
